Buying a French Bulldog puppy - what to look for?

Buying a French Bulldog is a decision that requires careful consideration. The breed is extremely popular, but unfortunately, health problems do occur within the French Bulldog. That is why it is important to thoroughly inform yourself before purchasing a puppy.

A French Bulldog is known for its appearance, but this is also where a large part of the problem lies. In the past, much breeding focused on physical traits such as a short muzzle and a compact build, without sufficient consideration for health. It is important to realize that a “beautiful” dog is not automatically a healthy dog. Therefore, always look beyond appearance and pay close attention to how a dog moves and breathes. You can read more about this on our health page.

One of the most important points in the French Bulldog is breathing. A healthy dog should be able to breathe freely, even during exercise or in warmer temperatures. Pay attention to signs such as audible breathing or snoring, becoming short of breath quickly, or difficulty with exertion. These may be signals that the airways are not functioning optimally. More information about this can be found on our health page.

A good breeder has the parent dogs thoroughly examined before breeding takes place. This includes examinations of joints, breathing, eyes, heart, and DNA testing. Always ask which health tests have been carried out, whether you can see the results, and how the parent dogs function in daily life. You can read more about this on our health and health testing pages.

It is also advisable, if possible, to visit the breeder before the puppies are born. This allows you to meet the mother dog and get a good impression of her character, health, and living environment. This often says more than only seeing the puppies at a young age. Take the time to get to know the people behind the breeding as well and make sure you are well informed. A reliable breeder takes the time to explain and shares open and honest information about the dogs, their health, and the choices that have been made.

In addition, a good breeder will gladly explain what the different health tests involve and how to interpret the results. For someone without experience, this can be quite complex, which makes clear and honest explanation all the more important.

It is important to realize that no health test can ever provide a 100% guarantee. Even with careful testing and selection, there will always be a certain degree of uncertainty, simply because we are working with living animals. However, risks can be minimized as much as possible in this way.

Unfortunately, many dogs are still bred without proper attention to health, often with the goal of producing as many puppies as possible. These dogs are often offered at lower prices but tend to come with greater risks. Buying a puppy “because you feel sorry for it” may seem like a good intention, but it actually keeps this trade going. That is why it is important to consciously choose a reliable breeder.

Finally, we recommend speaking with and, if possible, visiting multiple breeders to get the best possible understanding. Buying a puppy is not an impulse decision, but a choice for which you will carry responsibility for many years. Not every French Bulldog has health problems, but the risks within the breed are present. By educating yourself, asking the right questions, and remaining critical, you increase the chance of a healthy and wonderful French Bulldog puppy that you can enjoy for many years.
