About us

Welcome to French Bulldog kennel Noé Retro Frenchies, a small-scale French Bulldog breeder in Friesland.

My name is Iris, and together with my partner and two French Bulldogs, I live surrounded by the beautiful nature of Lippenhuizen, Friesland. Surrounded by forests and wonderful walking paths.

Our passion for dogs started early in life. We both grew up with various dog breeds. When we decided to live together in an apartment in the center of Heerenveen, we wanted to welcome a dog that would fit well with our living environment. My personal preference had always been the French Bulldog, because of their fantastic character and unique appearance, although I was aware of some health aspects.

To make sure we would welcome a healthy dog, I decided to look for a breeder who was affiliated with the breed club. I was convinced that these breeders were mainly committed to the health of the breed (by now I know that unfortunately this is not always the case). This is how we got in touch with a breeder through the breed club, and this is how our first French Bulldog, Néla, came into our lives

Néla has a wonderful character, and we are very happy with her. Unfortunately, health problems became visible around her first year of life, including allergies and the need for a BOAS surgery at the age of 1.5 years.

This experience made us realize how important it is to be aware of the health of the breed and the careful selection of a breeder.

This motivated me to dive deeper into the breed and the associated health issues. It resulted in a strong drive to do things differently and to commit myself to this wonderful breed. From this, a modest dream arose to start breeding in the future.

When we decided to go for a second French Bulldog, we wanted to approach things differently this time. Aware of the health problems, we looked for a breeder outside of the breed club, someone who did not cling to unhealthy breed standards but was truly committed to improving the health of the breed.

After extensive research and conversations with various breeders, we came across Esther Campschroer, owner of kennel Perfectionum Tendre. Esther has been committed to improving the breed for a long time and was able to inform us well. This is how Zoë came into our lives, an athletically built type with more nose, a longer back, a good amount of energy, and a lovely character. We are incredibly grateful for Zoë.The dream and the drive to contribute to the breed kept growing.

I followed several courses on genetics and dog breeding and learned a lot from breeder Chantal Wageveld, owner of French Bulldog kennel Hawbucks. I have also gained a lot of knowledge from books about health and breeding. In addition, I am currently following a course at EduPet, an academy focused on dog behavior and training. I find dog behavior incredibly interesting, and it helps me to better understand and guide our dogs and puppies.

Meanwhile, the time came to test Zoë, which was an important and exciting period for us. It is very important for us to truly improve the breed instead of simply multiplying it. Fortunately, Zoë passed all the tests, and we can begin our dream.

Then it was time to choose a kennel name. Believe me, I spent many sleepless nights over that, haha. In the end, we chose the name Noé Retro Frenchies. “Noé” is a combination of Néla and Zoë, symbolic of our journey that started with Néla’s health and deepened with Zoë. With her, we hope to welcome our first puppies. “Retro” in our name refers to recreating the look from the past. We aim to bring back the characteristics of French Bulldogs as they used to be in the dogs we breed: a longer nose, a tail, and a less compact body.

This is how “Noé Retro Frenchies” was created. We are a French Bulldog breeder in Friesland, fully dedicated to improving the breed and working towards a healthier French Bulldog.
